7 Summer LDR Date Ideas for Couples Miles Away

Summer is just around the corner, so if you are one of the lucky ones who gets to visit your long-distance lover this summer, I am going to give you a few summer LDR date ideas for couples in long-distance relationship so you can update your summer dating repertoire.

But first and foremost I would love to give a little background about my fiancé, Mitch, and I. I am from California, and Mitch is from Australia. Mitch and I met a little more than two years ago. He stumbled upon my Tumblr blog, and, after a few days of messaging back and forth, we started to take our relationship further and become a couple. After eight months of Skype dates, FaceTime calls and care packages, we finally met during Christmas of 2014.

Two years later, we have a total of four visits between us, we are engaged and planning a wedding for September, and we are continuing the ongoing process of the Nonimmigrant Visa for a Fiancé(e) (K-1). Mitch and I currently run a long-distance relationship blog on Tumblr where we share our personal experiences and give relationship advice to couples.

Mitch and I love to go on dates. We love to go out and explore the town we find ourselves in and continue to make memories with each other. Over the past week, Mitch and I have compiled a list of our favorite dates that we would love to share with you. Hopefully, our list can give you and your LDR significant other some new ideas for dates the next time that you two find yourselves together. Keep in mind that some of these dates may take some preparation, so take the necessary steps to ensure a great and fun date.

Aquarium and Zoo

fish-1319830_1920I love love going to the aquarium and the zoo. During each of our visits, we have gone to either an aquarium or a zoo. We have visited Fresno Chaffee Zoo in California and the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia. Zoos are so much fun! I love enjoying the different exhibits and gushing over the cute, fuzzy animals. Every time I see one, I tell Mitch that I want one, and he indulges me by always saying yes. He fuels that fire quite often. If you are close to the Monterey area visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, you won’t regret it. There is something about watching animals swim that is very calming and relaxing to me. I also find the atmosphere and ambiance to be very romantic. When the aquarium is quiet, you can simply enjoy the animals and your honey. It can become quite a wonderful and memorable date.

Museum

If you are one who enjoys growing in knowledge and history, then a museum is always fun and exciting. It sure s one of the best summer LDR date ideas. While in Australia, Mitch and I visited the National Dinosaur Museum, and we had SO MUCH FUN! We became “official” dinosaur hunters, and I have a little dinosaur keychain whose name is Fred the Friendly Dinosaur. If you two aren’t too much into history, you two can always find a fun museum such as the National Dinosaur Museum or even Madam Tussauds wax museum. Take silly pictures with your favorite celebrity or movie characters. You’ll be making fun memories. We also enjoyed the National Museum of Australia in Canberra, Australia. If, like Mitch and I, you two are from different countries, it’s exciting to learn about your significant other’s home country. I encourage going to some form of museum and continuing to not only learn about your S/O but also what makes their home country great. Then you, too, can hold a sense of pride for that country.

Theme Park or Boardwalk

If you are nearby some sort of theme park or boardwalk, then I encourage that you two take a little drive and enjoy some fun time at a theme park or boardwalk. Mitch and I have been to Disneyland, and although it was ridiculously crowded, we still had fun. He still wears his Donald Duck hat sometimes. Going to a theme park or boardwalk encourages you each to dive into your inner child and be a little carefree for a moment. It’s always fun to kiss on the Ferris wheel with your honey, take pictures with the characters, and try different and delicious foods within the park.

Picnic in the Park or on the Beach

Being outdoors and enjoying the sun and the scenery is always one of my favorite things to do in general. You and your S/O can either run through your favorite drive-through or get creative and make lunch together. Go off and find a nice little spot with either a picnic table or a green patch of grass, and enjoy the simplicity of being outside and engaging in fun conversation with your S/O. Sometimes it becomes necessary to take time away from technology and disconnect from social media and reconnect with people.

Netflix Binge

Mitch and I love to just sit around and run nonstop episodes of our favorite show or have a Steve Carell (my favorite actor) movie marathon. So if you are anything like us, it’s always fun to put on your favorite sweatpants and lounge around with some junk food, your favorite movies and your favorite person sitting next to you. Sometimes after a long week, it’s nice to just do nothing for awhile and treat yourself to some delicious food that is good for your soul.

Classic Dinner and a Movie

Sometimes you can’t beat the simple and classic dinner and a movie. Putting on a special outfit, a stunning statement necklace and some cute shoes is always so much fun. I love to dress up and go out with Mitch. It is our go-to date. Because we love movies so much, we usually end up at the movie theater. Dressing up for a date makes the evening much more memorable, and dressing up for your S/O makes them feel special and important. If you don’t quite feel like going out after your long day, then I suggest cooking dinner together and popping in a movie into your DVD player. Cooking together is a lot of fun, and it allows you to explore the creative side of your long-distance love. Plus, you can’t a beat a cute little food fight!

A Walk Down Main Street

Show off the town you live in to your significant other, or ask them to show you their favorite spots in town as one of summer LDR date ideas. Explore local stores, and get your grub on from the local hot spot. You may even find some places that you didn’t know existed or will come back to every time you visit. This date idea is most definitely one of my favorites because you get to hear about a memory that your sweetheart had while at a certain restaurant or a store. Visit these stores or restaurants that your S/O may have visited frequently as a kid. This will allow you two to dive into each other childhoods and share and compare memories. You will also get some idea of what your S/O was like as a kid.

Life is busy—busy with work, school, friends, family and many other responsibilities that can, at times, burden and wear down your relationship. Going on dates with your long-distance significant other is very important to allow the relationship to grow and flourish. Time must be set aside for each other to show how much you care about your relationship. Staying connected with your S/O is important whether you are miles apart or standing next to each other hand in hand. Always go on dates with the one you love and enjoy spending time with. I hope you gained some great ideas and insight with the suggestions I’ve given.

I would also love to hear your summer LDR date ideas so maybe Mitch and I can try the next time we are together. What are your favorite summer date ideas?
