Supporting Your Partner Through a Tough Time in an LDR

One of the downsides of being in a long distance relationship is being away from your loved one, especially when the times are tough. Nobody wants to be apart from their loved ones during a tough time, but sometimes we have to face the reality that we live so far away from our partner and we can’t be with them in person when they need us. If this is a situation that you are facing at the moment, I hope these tips can help you while you are supporting your significant other during a tough time.

What to Expect When Your Significant Other is Facing a Tough Time

When your significant other is facing a tough time, the dynamics of your relationship most likely will change. First, you can expect for some disruptions in your communications routine. Your significant other may keep his or her feelings to themselves, or even trying to avoid you during their tough time. In addition, your significant other can also become more sensitive, which may lead to some frictions between the two of you. While this situation is expected, don’t let it discourage you. Instead, let this situation help you to strengthen the bond between the two of you. Now here are the things that you can do for your significant other during a tough time in a long-distance relationship.

Don’t Just Turn Away from Them

I understand that being supportive of your significant other during a tough time is not easy. However, don’t just turn your back from your significant other when the times get tough. Try to remember the good times that you had before. Cherish those times, and also remember that your significant other needs your support, especially since you are their partner.

Be a Trustworthy Partner

Like I previously mentioned, your significant other can be secretive when they are facing a tough time. When someone is going through so much, it is only normal if they become more secretive than ever. They may feel reluctant to share their thoughts and feelings and only want to keep them to themselves. In addition, they also may lose their trust in their surroundings, including yourself as their partner.

Ideally, you should be the first person that they run to when your significant other is facing a tough time. But what can you do when they don’t even trust you? Hence, you need to do extra effort to show them that you are trustworthy. Make them believe that they can rely on you completely, even though you are far away. Give them enough space to let them cool down, and once they have regained their focus, let them trust you with their secrets and thoughts.

Show Extra Love

When your significant other is facing a tough time, it’s the perfect time to show some extra love even though you are far away. Shower him or her with extra attention, do the things that they love for them, and let them know how much you truly love them. This is the time where they need you the most, and don’t let distance make them feel that you love them less.

The easiest thing to do when you want to show someone that you love them is by being present. However, being present does not have to be in person. If you are not able to pack your bags and visit your significant other, why don’t you try your best to allocate more time for your significant other? Try to always be available when they call you, or at least always shower them with extra attention through text messages.

Fight Together

Facing a tough time can also bring an opportunity to fight together with your significant other. This is an opportunity to strengthen your bonds, connect with your significant other in a deeper level, and fight together to face the tough time. If you can’t physically be with your significant other, try to spend extra time with them, let them talk to you, and you can try to find a solution together. You see, facing it all together is the key. Once you are able to do it, navigating through a tough time should be much easier.

While being a supportive partner during a tough time in a long-distance relationship is not easy, it is not an impossible thing to be done. I understand that you may need to do some extra efforts in navigating through tough times, but trust me, it will be worth it in the end. After all, the most important thing in a relationship, especially a long-distance relationship, is how you and your significant other are committed to being by each other’s side through good times and bad times. May the challenge that you are facing brings you closer to each other and makes your relationship stronger. Good luck!
